BACOLOD City – Yesterday in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, the Philippine Army’s 94th Infantry Battalion (94IB) and the New People’s Army (NPA) clashed.

Lieutenant Colonel Van Donald Almonte, commander of the 94IB, said the encounter began around 6 a.m. in Barangay Carabalan, Himamaylan City. Government troops were conducting a security patrol in the barangay to validate reports of extortion.

At least 81 families composed of 355 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from sitios Canagbaan, Da-at, Florete and Cabalungan fled their homes and are presently sheltering at the Barangay Carabalan multi-purpose gym, according to the Himamaylan City Social Welfare and Development Office.

In a video by a local vlogger, intense automatic gunfire and loud explosions could be heard.

Almonte believed the rebels were from the NPA’s Central Negros Front 2.

As of this writing, combat operations were still taking place in the area.

In October last year, a week-long gun battle also ensued in the barangay, which resulted in the death of Romeo Nanta, or “Ka Juanito Magbanua”, commanding officer of the Regional Operational Command of the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, as well as spokesperson of the NPA’s Apolinario Gatmaitan Command.
