MANILA – Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Wednesday announced that the Bicameral Conference approved to raise the retirement age to 57 years old of the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

In a media briefing, Estrada said they approved Senate Bill No 1489 and House Bill 6517, on the amendment of fixed term of ranking of AFP officers and personnel from the present retirement age of 56 years old.


Estrada, chairperson of the Senate Committee on National Defense, said most of the time, retired AFP officers and members ended up employed in private companies after reaching the age of 56.

The AFP chief of staff, according to Estrada, will have a maximum tour of duty of three years except if he is removed by the President while service commanders of the Philippine Navy, Air Force, Army and Superintendent of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) will have a fixed term of two years.

Estrada added that the term of an appointed officer who are 56 years old can be extended until 59 years old to complete the 3-year maximum duty.
