HADJI MOHAMMAD AJUL, Basilan Province – Two lying-low Abu Sayyaf Group members voluntarily surrendered at the Headquarters, 15th Special Forces Company here in Barangay Tuburan Proper on Thursday, 01 April 2021, as peace and development efforts in the locality are intensified.

One ASG returnee was identified as Abu Hatab, a former follower of the deceased ASG sub-leader Abdurajak Janjalani and later joined the group of Hamsiraji Sali. The other returnee was identified as Abu Jig, 32 years old, a resident of Barangay Macalang, Albarka, Basilan Province and a follower of ASG sub-leader Nurhassan Jamiri. They yielded one (1) caliber 30 US Garand rifle, one (1) M203 caliber 40 Grenade Launcher, one (1) fragmentation grenade, clips, and several rounds of live ammunitions.

Captain Sherwin D. Latiera, the Commanding Officer of 15SFC, welcomes the voluntary surrender of the two ASG members who have been lying-low for years and encourages the remaining members to lay down their arms and embrace peace.

“Pahalagahan natin ang ating buhay. Mas masarap ang mamuhay ng tahimik at mapayapa. Kagaya ng mga kapatid natin na ASG na ngayon ay nagbalik-loob sa pamahalaan, may panahon pa kayo upang magbagong buhay. Narito kami upang tumulong.”, Captain Latiera expressed.

The said ASG returnees will be enrolled in the Program Against Violent Extremism (PAVE) where they will undergo psychosocial interventions and trainings in preparation for their reintegration to the mainstream society as responsible and productive citizens.

Presently, there are almost three hundred ASG returnees who already laid down their arms here in Basilan Province as peace and development efforts by the Local Government Unit are intensified and continually gains ground.
