A farmer was forcibly taken and killed by armed men believed to be communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels n Lanuza, Surigao del Sur on Thursday night.

Col. James Goforth, Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office director, said Ramir Silvano, 53, was taken from his home in Barangay Sibahay, Lanuza around 7:50 p.m.

“The victim was inside his sari-sari store when five armed men, believed to be NPA members, arrived and took the victim towards the mountainous portion of Barangay Sibahay,” Goforth told the Philippine News Agency Friday. “Silvano is an ordinary farmer and the former barangay captain of the place."

The police officer pointed to the NPA's Guerrilla Front 30 as the perpetrators.

After receiving the report about the farmer's abduction, Goforth said the Lanuza police and the Army’s 36th Infantry Battalion recovered the victim’s body around 8:15 p.m. more than a kilometer away from a sari-sari store.

The victim bore gunshot wounds on his left neck and right belly, and the troops recovered from the crime scene two fired cartridge cases of an unknown caliber.

“We condemn the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG) for the killing of an ordinary farmer in Lanuza. Their action manifests their true identity as terrorists that destroy the lives of ordinary citizens, sow terror in communities, and hamper development programs and services,” Goforth said.

On Wednesday evening, NPA rebels also killed a farmer in Barangay Bangonay, Jabonga, Agusan del Norte.

The NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines
