Government forces arrested a ranking member of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Bulacan on Wednesday.

Philip Alcantara, said to be platoon leader of the NPA’s Special Operations Group in Southern Tagalog, was cornered in Barangay Panginay in Guiguinto town at around 8:30 a.m. He reportedly yielded a caliber .45 pistol, ammunition and a hand grenade.

Maj. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., 7th Infantry Division commander, said Alcantara has pending warrants for multiple frustrated murder and multiple attempted murder as well as illegal possession of firearms and explosives.

Maj. Israel Galorio, Northern Luzon Command spokesman, said the suspect’s father, Tirso, is a consultant of the National Democratic Front, who is wanted for the ambush of Quezon Rep. Marcial Punzalan Jr. in 2001.

In Pampanga, a former member of the NPA’s Tarlac-Zambales Command surrendered in Angeles City on Thursday.

City police chief Col. Rommel Batangas said the husband of the surrenderee yielded to authorities in October.
