A soldier and three civilians were killed while four others wounded in an ambush in a remote village in Basilan, police and military officials said Saturday.

The Basilan-based 101st Infantry Brigade of the Philippine Army said the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Friday in Barangay Bohe Lebbung, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan province.

The Basilan Police Provincial Office (BPPO) identified the fatalities as PFC Mark Anthony Monte, militiamen Samy Akay and Alibasa Antaas, and Kong Uging, a civilian.

Authorities identified the wounded as militiaman Randy Ibung and Gary Cuevas, and civilians Halam Jainul and Hakim Marani.

Police said two of the suspects were identified as Karim Manisan and Lito Manisan, both members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT) in Bohe Lebbung, Tipo-Tipo.

The other suspects, who were also BPAT members, were not immediately identified.

Police said the group had a misunderstanding, and that Monte and the other victims confronted the suspects 10 minutes before the incident. Authorities did not elaborate on the cause of the conflict.

The victims were walking home when the suspects opened fire, killing them, police said.

The suspects fled after the incident, police added.
