ZAMBOANGA CITY, Dec 26 (PIA) – The country’s hero general has proposed for a solution to end violent extremism in the Southern Philippines.

Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, a recipient of the country’s highest military award, the Medal for Valor and current commander of the Western Mindanao Command (WESTMINCOM) recently met in Sulu with high officials of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi Tawi last week where he outlined his “BRAVE” proposal to finally bring to an end violent extremism in the areas. BRAVE stands for Broad Reform Against Violent Extremism.

“The BRAVE adopts the strategic framework of the Program against Violent Extremism for Peace which depicts the interplay of good governance, law enforcement and community participation,” the general said.

WESTMINCOM spokesperson Maj. Arvin John Encinas explained that the commander’s proposal is actually a reform program that focuses on three objectives that include “eliminating the drivers of violent extremism, comprehensive mainstreaming of former rebels and finally sustaining peace and development in the country and in the province as a whole”.

Among those who attended the meeting with the general were Basilan Governor Hadjiman Hataman-Saliman, Sulu Governor Abdusakur Tan, Tawi-Tawi Governor Yshmael Sali and Basilan Congressman Mujiv Hataman, said Encinas. (NBE/DIS/PIA9-Zamboanga with reports from WESTMINCOM PIO)
