Staff sergeant injured in 'NPA' attack

From the Sun Star-Bacolod (Nov 28): Staff sergeant injured in 'NPA' attack

A MEMBER of the Philippine Army was wounded after suspected members of the New People's Army (NPA) attacked the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit detachment in Barangay Asia, Hinoba-an, Negros Occidental on November 27.

Colonel Benedict Arevalo, commanding officer of the Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade based in Murcia town, identified the victim as Staff Sergeant Ricky Ignacio of the 12th Infantry Battalion.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound on his right buttock. He is now in stable condition.

Arevalo said the two suspected rebels reportedly harassed the new detachment, which is still being constructed.

He said the military troopers were able to retaliate, but they have yet to confirm if there were casualties on the rebels side.

Arevalo said rebels attacked the detachment because it will definitely affect their movements in the area.

The pursuit operation is ongoing.
