From the Philippine News Agency (Nov 20): Police nab soldier suspected of shooting brothers
DAVAO CITY – Police arrested a member of the Army's 3rd Infantry Battalion on Tuesday after he was identified as the one who allegedly shot two brothers on Sunday, killing one and wounding the other.
Chief Inspector Archimedes Wesley, the commander of the Calinan Police Station, said Private First Class Melgar Piloden Sumopang, 27, was arrested after witnesses said he shot Eddie and Garry Gumela along Roman Diaz Street, Calinan, this city.
Eddie, 28, a motorcycle driver and a resident of Purok 2, Barangay Manuel Guinga, Tugbok District sustained a lone gunshot wound that caused his untimely death while younger brother Garry, 27, single, was rushed to the hospital after the incident.
According to the relatives of the victims, the brothers were about to buy supplies at a store when an unidentified person wearing a black jacket and camouflage short pants approached and shot the victims.
The suspect casually left the crime scene and took a motorcycle towards Baguio District. Witnesses the suspect was Sumopang.
Lt. Col Oscar Partuza, 3IB commander, said he brought Sumopang to Calinan police.
"If may witness to against our personnel, hayaan na po natin ang police mag file ng case (If there is a witness against our personnel, let us let the police file the case) because we do not condone or tolerate any wrongdoing of our troops especially that we are the protectors of the people of Davao City,” Partuza said.
