4 farmers hurt in Maguindanao ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (Oct 11): 4 farmers hurt in Maguindanao ambush

SULTAN KUDARAT, Maguindanao – Four persons were injured in an ambush believed to have stemmed from a long-standing family feud in this town on Wednesday, police said.

Chief Supt. Graciano Mijares, police director for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, ordered on Thursday the Sultan Kudarat municipal police to strictly impose a gun ban and set up more checkpoints following the incident.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday, unidentified gunmen ambushed and seriously wounded William Soledad, 38, a landowner, and his farm workers Allan Abu, 29; Usop Paguilian, 39; and Fernando Mancula, 59, all of Barangay Dalumangcob, Sultan Kudarat town in Maguindanao.

The victims were on board a mini-truck and were heading home from the farm when they were waylaid by gunmen, who positioned themselves on both sides of the dirt road in the area. All the victims were unarmed.

They are now confined at a hospital in Cotabato City. Police said the Soledad family has been at odds with another clan in the area over land claims.

Local officials have sought the elders of the quarreling clans to settle their differences in a peace dialogue.
