ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Police authorities arrested an alleged member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) involved in the kidnapping and killing of plantation workers 16 years ago in Basilan province, an official announced Wednesday.

The suspect is the 10th ASG member involved in the plantation workers’ kidnapping that was arrested since January 1 this year.

Chief Supt. Billy Beltran, Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) director, identified the arrested suspect as Rocco Haman, 38, who carries the aliases Ruco Haman Isdad, and Hamador Hadjula.


Beltran said the suspect was arrested at around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday near a restaurant on La Purisima Street, Barangay Zone III, this city.

Beltran said Haman has standing warrant of arrest for eight counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention issued by a court in Isabela City, Basilan province.

He said Haman was allegedly involved in the kidnapping of workers from the Golden Harvest Plantation on June 11, 2001 in Barangay Tairan, Lantawan, Basilan.

He lauded the Police Station 4 personnel under the leadership of Chief Insp. Hazel Fernandez for a job well-done.
