A day following the first death anniversary of top New People's Army (NPA) leader Leoncio "Ka Parago" Pitao on Tuesday, the Philippines's 19th most wanted person and a renowned rebel was arrested Wednesday morning.

A joint operation of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) on June 29 in Pantukan, Compostela Valley province resulted in the arrest of Eddie Genelsa alias Lando.

Troops from the 46th Infantry Battalion, 1001st Infantry Brigade and 10th Military Intelligence Battalion and police forces from Pantukan and Mabini municipal police stations arrested the NPA leader at Brgy. Bongabong, Pantukan by virtue of warrants of arrest issued by Regional Trial Court Branch 3, 11th Judicial Region in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley.

Capt. Rhyan Batchar, 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the warrants were issued in connection with Criminal Cases Number 6385 for arson; 7554, 5648, 5889 and 3926 for murder and frustrated murder; and 6386, 4620, 5820 and 5718 for robbery.

Genelsa is the commanding officer of the Pulang Bagani Company 3 of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee.

"He was responsible in leading in the murder of several civilians and soldiers, the destruction of properties, and in extorting money from civilians and business establishments in Compostela Valley," Batchar added.

According to Joint Order No. 14, issued in 2012 by the Department of National Defense and Department of the Interior and Local Government, Genelsa has an existing P5 million bounty on his head. This makes him at par with Pitao who was the commanding officer of the Pulang Bagani Company 1.

Col. Macairog Alberto, 1001st Infantry Brigade commander, encouraged other NPA members to return to the folds of law, live peacefully and become productive members of the community. He added that armed struggle is not the solution to the country's social problem.
