Two brigades of the Philippine Army (PA) and a Marine battalion have been deployed as fighting and pursuit operations against the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) continue after a clash on 9 April left 23 dead and 52 injured in Basilan in the southern Philippines.

Sporadic fighting has been reported with extremists attempting diversionary attacks on nearby Jolo province on a separate island. Additionally, New People's Army (NPA) units have also increased tactical actions.

According to Major Filemon Tan Jr, the spokesperson for the PA's Western Mindanao Command, as of 14 April, 31 ASG gunmen have been killed, three wounded and two captured.
