Soldier killed in NPA attack in Batangas

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 20): Soldier killed in NPA attack in Batangas

Despite a New People's Army (NPA) declaration of a Yuletide ceasefire from Dec. 23, 2015 to Jan. 4, 2016, rebels attacked a military detachment in Nasugbu, Batangas, killing one soldier on Saturday afternoon.

The incident took place at 3:15 p.m. at Barangay Calayo, Nasugbu, said Southern Luzon Command (SOLCOM) spokesperson Major Angelo Guzman

The fatality was identified as Staff Sgt. Armando M. Silvestre of the 730th Combat Group of the 710th Special Operations Wing, Philippine Air Force. He suffered a gunshot wound in the chest that caused his immediate death.

Return fire from government forces repelled the NPAs and caused an undetermined number of casualties to the rebel group.

Guzman said SOLCOM condemned the attack, considering that its troops in Batangas are on standby alert for humanitarian assistance and disaster response in connection with the heavy rains brought by tropical storm "Nona" recently.

Troops were dispatched to track down the perpetrators.
