Two killed, one hurt in Sorsogon ambush

From the Philippine News Agency (Apr 29): Two killed, one hurt in Sorsogon ambush

Two persons were killed, one of them a soldier and another a civilian after an ambush by New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Barangay San Juan, Casiguran town, Sorsogon Tuesday morning.

Also wounded in the incident was another soldier.

Capt. Bethany Cadungan, 903rd Infantry Brigade spokesperson, said the incident took place around 8:00 a.m.

She added that the slain soldier was from Alpha Company of the 31st Infantry Battalion.

Cadungan stated that the fatality and another soldier were on their way to Casiguran Municipal Hall, aboard a motorcycle, to coordinate with local government officials regarding a military dental and medical mission when waylaid by 15 heavily-armed rebels affiliated with Larangan 1 of Komiteng Probinsyal, Sorsogon.

In the ensuing attack, one of the soldier was killed while the other one was wounded.

Killed by stray bullets fired by the rebels was a civilian, Anthony Habalo, an employee of the Casiguran Water District.

Cadungan said that names of the two soldiers are still withheld pending notification of their respective families.

Brig. Gen. Joselito E. Kakilala, 903rd Infantry Brigade commander, said that the rebels are again resorting to dirty tactics of attacking non-combatants such as the two unarmed soldiers and the innocent civilian, as a desperate move to get even with debacles recently suffered from government troops.

The remains of the civilian victim and the soldier were brought to the Casiguran Municipal Police Station for proper disposition while the wounded soldier, who suffered minor gunshot wound in the palm, was brought to the nearest hospital for treatment.

“The NPA here in Sorsogon Province is now losing the strength and the capability to launch major tactical offensives against the government troops as their strength is now diminishing and also their popular support is weaning. This is the very reason why they resort to treacherous and wary attacks such as what happened today. What is sad and unfortunate however is that an innocent civilian was killed as a result of said incident," Kakilala said.
