A New People's Army (NPA) fighter was killed along with two militiamen following an encounter in Sitio Akday, Barangay Guadalupe, Esperanza town, Agusan Del Sur Monday morning.
Capt. Christian Uy, 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said Tuesday the clash took place around 8:30 a.m.
He added that troops from the 23rd Cadre Battalion, a sub-unit of the 4th Infantry Division, was conducting security patrols in the area after receiving reports that NPA fighters were infiltrating in the locality.
He added that a 45-minute firefight took place between the combatants.
Uy said that the militiamen were killed while trying to rescue civilians caught in the crossfire.
Killed in the firefight was one NPA fighter affiliated with Guerilla Front 8.
Three other civilians were slightly wounded along with one military personnel.
Pursuit operations are now being conducted by the 26th Infantry Battalion.
