Military keeping watch on MNLF in Palawan

From InterAksyon (Sep 10): Military keeping watch on MNLF in Palawan

An MNLF identification card said to have been recovered in northern Palawan

Although the military sees little chance of the Moro National Liberation Front mounting a similar action here as the one in Zamboanga City, the Western Command has alerted its units to closely monitor members of the rebel organization in Palawan.

“So far there are no indications of a similar action or a possible reinforcement of their comrades in Mindanao. We are banking on the local MNLF’s previous commitment to tread the peaceful path instead of armed struggle,” Wescom chief Lieutenant General Rustico Guerrero told InterAksyon.com.

In 2011, MNLF founder Nur Misuari and representatives of different sectors in Palawan signed an agreement declaring the province a “Zone of Peace.”

A source who insisted on anonymity said the MNLF has been actively recruiting members in Palawan and showed InterAksyon.com copies of identification cards issued by the organization’s central committee and signed by Misuari.

Most telling was that, according to the source, “these IDs were recovered from northern Palawan.”

This is contrary to common perception that the MNLF is more active in southern Palawan.

“And as you can see, they (ID holders) are wearing military fatigues, which I suppose means that there is a continuous training of their new recruits or future fighters somewhere in the province,” the source added.
