From the Philippine Star (Jul 1): Unidentified men torch Abra town mayor's backhoe

A backhoe owned by the construction firm of Mayor-elect Dominic Valera of Bangued town in Abra was torched by unidentified men in Baay-Licuan town.

The Cordillera police said the project implementor of the construction firm identified as 44-year-old Vicki Dawigen Sabian reported the incident to the police on Sunday morning.

The equipment worth P6,000,000.00 was parked along the Abra-Kalinga road particularly at Km 473 sitio Nagpawayan, Baay-Licuan, Abra when it was torched.

The police have yet to determine the motive for the attack.

  1. Incidents like this one generally have been the work of Maoist NPA rebels in retribution for the failure of individuals/corporations to pay their "revolutionary taxes," a euphemism for extortion payments/protection money.
