Five police officers were hurt after a still undetermined
number of suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels ambushed them in Sorsogon
province Monday afternoon.
Supt. Nonito Furio Marquez, Sorsogon Police Provincial
Office public relations office chief, said the incident took place at 2:45 p.m.
at Sitio Casili, Barangay Marinas, Gubat town.
He said the officers were heading back to the Gubat
Municipal Police Station after submitting illegal drug substance shabu to the
Regional Crime Laboratory 5 in Legazpi
City when their Mahindra
patrol jeep was fired upon allegedly by the NPAs.
Wounded were team leader SPO1 Ronald Din, PO3 Aris Hasal,
PO2 Dennis Garbida and PO2 Sheryll Marbella, and PO1 Gerry Gabuyo.
Despite being wounded, the officers managed to return fire
and evade the rebel ambush.
The firefight lasted for 15 minutes, Marquez said.
The rebels only retreated after learning that operatives of
the Gubat Municipal Police Station and the 5th Regional Public Safety Battalion
were on their way.
As of this posting, pursuit operations are ongoing.
