Three soldiers were killed while another 13 were wounded
during a New People's Army (NPA) ambush preceded by a landmine explosion in
Kalinga on Monday night.
The incident took place at 11:20 p.m. at Barangay Agatan,
Pinukpuk town, 503rd Infantry Brigade commander Brig. Gen. Paul Atal said.
All military casualties were members of the 5th Infantry
Division's reconnaissance company.
Atal said the troopers were headed to their command post in
Barangay Kamalog after their security operations in the Balbalan-Pinukpuk area
when their vehicles were mined and damaged by the rebels, wounding many of
those aboard.
Atal said the security operation was done under the supervision
of the 50th Infantry Battalion.
Three troopers were killed in the ensuing 25-minute
firefight while the NPAs sustained an undetermined number of casualties.
No government weapons were lost in the firefight.
Atal vowed to file charges against the rebel group for their
indiscriminate use of landmines.
Pursuit operations are still ongoing as of this posting.
