Two schools for indigenous people (IP) in the far-flung areas of Surigao del Norte recently received support from the “Tabang Eskwela” project of the non-profit youth organization, Propelling Our Inherited Nation Through Our Youth (POINTY), Inc. (POINTY-SDN).

In a statement Thursday, POINTY-SDN said IP pupils from the Tiltilan and Palilihan Elementary Schools in the town of Gigaquit received on Wednesday 50 reams of bond papers and 14 bottles of printer ink donated by IU Philippines and two gallons of isopropyl alcohol from POINTY-SDN and the Army's 30th Infantry Battalion.

“Both schools are considered IP institutions and the distribution of the modular learning materials was coordinated with the Department of Education (DepEd) in the area,” the group said.

“IU Philippines is a non-governmental organization and a fan-based organization that provides support to the Tabang Eskwela program of POINTY. The provision of the support is also in time for the 12th anniversary of Korean actress and songwriter Lee Ji-Eun in show business,” it added.

The materials were received by the teachers of the two schools, POINTY-SDN said.

“Tabang Eskwela” program, the group said, aims to help schools that offer modular learning programs for their students amidst the continuing threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

The group said the learning materials they recently handed over will greatly benefit the IP students in Barangays Tiltilan and Palilihan upon the start of their regular classes.

Lt. Col. Ryan Charles G. Callanta, 30IB commander, expressed gratitude to POINTY-SDN and IU Philippines and considered the group as “partners in contributing efforts to maintain peace and security” in the town of Gigaquit.

“We believe that this undertaking is another milestone for our unit to continue to serve the Surigaonons despite the continued threat of the pandemic,” Callanta said.

He said the project would also protect the children of the IPs and their communities "from the deceptions and exploitations of the communist New People’s Army (NPA)".
“The programs and projects of POINTY-SDN is part of the unified efforts of different stakeholders to educate and care for the young IPs who are considered vulnerable from the recruitment of the Communist NPA Terrorists (CNTs) in the area,” Callanta added.
