Government troops rescued an abandoned wounded rebel of the communist New People’s Army in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, the military reported Thursday.
The wounded NPA rebel, identified only as Ka Lando, was rescued Wednesday in Barangay Guibo, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte by joint forces of the Army’s 97th and 53rd Infantry Battalions.
Lt. Col. Manaros Boransing, 97IB commander, said Lando was wounded in a clash with his troops on May 4 in Barangay Pange, Siayan municipality.
Boransing said Lando is a member of Team Abe, Squad 2, Main Regional Guerrilla Unit (MRGU) of the NPA’s Western Regional Party Committee.
“He was also the gunner of the M-60 general-purpose machine gun that was recovered by our troops during the last encounter,” he said.
Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera, 53IB commander, said the troops rescued Lando after the received information from the residents that a wounded NPA rebel was trying to seek medical help and refuge in one of the sitios in Barangay Guibo, Siayan.
Lando was taken to Kura Cesar Sang-an Station Hospital in Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur.
“Ka Lando will be medically attended and treated by our military doctors,” said Col. Leonel Nicolas, commander of the 102nd Infantry Brigade.
Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, commander of the 1st Infantry Division, commended the troops for "giving premium in protecting lives, even the life of their own enemy."
Ponio said that respect for human rights and observance to International Humanitarian Law is instilled on every soldier aside from tactical skills.
He described Lando as a victim of deceit and lies from the propaganda of the NPA.
