KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato, Feb 11 (PIA) – Better future awaits a former member of the communist group as he recently graduated from a technical-vocational program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) 12 in Barangay Ned, Lake Sebu, this province.
Last year, Alias Albert, who had been an active member of the Guerilla Front 73 of the New Peoples’ Army’s for 4 years, decided to lay down his arms and return to the fold of law. His primary consideration was his family and children.
“My life will be wasted if I continue with the armed struggle. I’m thinking of my children and their future,” alias Albert said during the graduation ceremony.
As a former rebel receiving a number of assistance from the national government, Alias Albert decided to take Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II course that TESDA 12, in partnership with the Barangay Council of Ned, offered for rebel returnees and indigenous people residents in the area.
With the skills he learned and the certificate of completion he got, Alias Albert is hopeful to start a livelihood or take a job as an electrician.
Meanwhile, TESDA 12 Regional Director Rafael Abrogar II assured that there will be more programs for IP residents and rebel returnees in the area.
“We will give additional training, such as dressmaking, solar voltage, food processing and more for the next few months” Abrogar said.
Apart from the provision of techvoc program, TESDA also helped the trainee-scholars secure other important documents, including birth certificates from the Philippine Statistics Authority.
TESDA Secretary Isidro Lapeña, who is also the cabinet officer for regional development and security (CORDS) for Region 12, directed all TESDA offices to give priority to skills development of marginalized groups, including former rebels.
In 2019, TESDA trained 413 rebel returnees in SOCCKSARGEN Region (Karl Mike Tabingo/TESDA 12/DED/PIA12)
