Government troops said they prevented the extortion activities of members of the New People’s Army (NPA) against farmers and residents in a far-flung village in Rosario town, Agusan del Sur over the weekend.
In a statement on Tuesday, Lt. Col. Warren C. Munda, commander of the Army's 75th Infantry Battalion (IB), said troops were immediately sent to the area after they received information from community residents about an impending collection of revolutionary taxes last Sunday by members of the NPA's Guerrilla Front 14 (GF-14).
Munda described GF-14 as a weakened guerrilla unit, led by a certain Arnold Conejar Orlanes.
While en route to the area, he said the troops "were fired upon by the NPA (rebels) that resulted in a five-minute gun battle."
No casualties were reported on the side of the government troops.
Soldiers recovered two firearms, ammunition, and other pieces of evidence at the encounter site, Munda said.
“This is proof that the people of Rosario (Agusan del Sur) are sincere to end the insurgency in their community, wherein numerous tips were fed and received by the 75IB regarding the presence of the armed group roaming around conducting extortion activity,” he said.
The NPA, Munda said, has been "planning to recover the support of the masses and to disrupt the joint efforts of the Army and the local government units to end decades of insurgency problems in the area."
However, he said the "influence" of the NPA has continued to weaken because of the "intensified development interventions done by the Army’s Post Community Support Program and the increased Intelligence and Focus Military Operations."
He said the interventions are part of the "whole-of-nation" approach being implemented through Executive Order 70 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte, with the aim of ending the local communist armed conflicts in the countryside.
“The Philippine Army will keep the CNTs on the run and make the ground hostile for them. These will make them weary and would lead the rebels to surrender,” Munda said.
CNT is military term for "Communist Party of the Philippines – New People’s Army Terrorists".
"It is a clear manifestation that they (people of Rosario) wanted lasting peace, live without fear of the CNTs and free from insurgents,” Munda added.
The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
