Col. Leonel Nicolas, commander of the anti-terrorist Joint Task Force Zamboanga, is now the head of the Army’s 102nd Infantry (Igosoon) Brigade based in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.
Capt. Clint Antipala, the Army’s 1st Infantry Division information officer, said Nicolas officially assumed the post during a change of command ceremony held at the headquarters of the Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade on Monday.
Nicolas succeeded Brig. Gen. Bagnus Gaerlan Jr., who was promoted as Assistant Division Commander of the 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division after a one-year-and-two-month stint as 102nd Infantry Brigade commander.
Antipala said Tuesday that Nicolas is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1991.
Nicolas is an Airborne and Scout Ranger and well-rounded military officer with expertise in operations, intelligence, and managerial acumen.
He earned his Master of Management from the Liceo de Cagayan University, and his Master of Public Management major in Development Security from the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP).
He also served as chief of staff, assistant chief of staff for operations, and commanded the 10th and 5th Infantry Battalions of the 1st Infantry Division.
Nicolas, during his assumption speech, committed to perform and contribute to the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).
He also expressed confidence in the convergence effort among government agencies, security forces, and stakeholders to "truly address the problem of insurgency."

“I am confident that the new brigade commander, with his expertise and capability, can sustain the gains of the brigade and can contribute in the attainment of a just and sustainable peace in Western Mindanao,” said Ancan, who is also commander of Task Force Zampelan (the Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao Provinces).
Meanwhile, Col. John Divinagracia has replaced Nicolas as commander of the Joint Task Force Zamboanga.
Divinagracia, a Zamboangueño, is deputy commander of the Army 101st Infantry Brigade (formerly 104th) based in Basilan province.
Nicolas is set to formally turn over the command of the Joint Task Force Zamboanga to Divinagracia on Monday.
