The commanding general of the Philippine Army's 203rd Infantry Brigade said accusations of harassment hurled against government troops by militant group Karapatan-Southern Tagalog are "baseless and untrue".
Brig. Gen. Marceliano Teofilo said on Thursday that all the actions of the military in the aftermath of an encounter with communist rebels were above-board.
“All we ask is that legal procedures will be observed such as making sure that the remains will be claimed by their relatives. The statement of Karapatan puts malice on the efforts of the PNP and the Army who have been partners of the local government unit (LGU) in protecting our fellow Mindoreños from the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-New People’s Army (NPA) atrocities,” Teofilo said.
The accusations against the military and police came from Karapatan’s Paralegal Team headed by Nievefe Numeron and Pastora Gleofe Balontong of the Methodist Church in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro.
He said the Karapatan members went to Mansalay town days after three NPA terrorists were killed in clashes against government troops.
The joint government forces seized five high-powered firearms, two Anti-Personnel Mines (AP Mines), live ammunition and subversive materials in a series of encounters.
“Surprisingly, they are so quick to cry out harassment from the government forces yet there was no condemnation of any of the terroristic actions perpetrated by the CPP-NPAs in Mindoro,” he added.
Teofilo instead urged Karapatan and National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) to condemn the killings of Jose Barera, Kennedy Dam-in Aquin and Jun-jun Ysog, innocent locals who somehow incurred the wrath of NPA terrorists.
He assured every Mindoreños that their Army will continue to defend them from the NPA terrorists, protect them from harm and ensure their rights are protected.
“If they carry weapons, destroy our people and disrupt the peace, then they will definitely meet their end trying to engage in armed conflict with our Army Peace Operators,” he warned.
The Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the NPA, are listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines.
