A suspect in the bloody Mamasapano clash that left 44 elite police officers dead in 2015 was arrested by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Cotabato City over the weekend.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in the Bangamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), led by the Cotabato City police, apprehended Tamano Esmail Sabpa or Tamano Sabpa Esmael at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the parking area of a regional hospital in Cotabato City, according to a police report.
Police said the suspect was arrested on a warrant issued by Cotabato City Regional Trial Court Branch 15 presiding judge Alandrex Betoya, dated Jan. 25, 2017.
This was effected over charges of direct assault with murder of the 44 Special Action Force (SAF) policemen in Mamasapano, Maguindanao, in January 2015, while the troops were serving an arrest warrant against terrorist Zulkifli Abdhir in the same town.
According to the police, the case of Esmail was not recommended for bail and the arrest was also under the PNP’s nationwide “Oplan Pagtugis.”
Authorities recovered from him one identification card.
