From the Visayan Daily Star (Feb 24): NPA rebels burn cargo truck
Suspected New People's Army rebels burned a cargo truck used in hauling sugarcane in Brgy. Budlasan, Canlaon City, Negros Oriental Thursday.
Witnesses told the military that about 10 NPA rebels, carrying high-powered firearms, waylaid the cargo truck owned by Lito Abellar, and ordered the driver and workers to disembark.
Investigation by the 62 nd Infantry Battalion showed that the armed suspects told the driver and farm workers that they were only after the truck, because its owner refused to pay revolutionary taxes.
Lt. Col. Darrel Banez, commanding officer of the 62 nd Infantry Battalion, who ordered the pursuit operations against the fleeing suspects, condemned the NPA for its latest atrocities.
Bañez said the civilian populace has long been tormented by the harassment and extortion activities of the CPP-NPA in the area.
He encouraged the community to condemn the barbaric acts of the CPP-NPA armed group.
