Tabuk City, Kalinga: A 22-year-old member of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to government, the Police Regional Office (PRO) here said.

Cordillera Regional Director Elmo Francis Sarona identified the NPA member as Lowell Carmelo Maglia of the Kilusang Larangang Gerilya (KLG), who surrendered morning of October 8 in Poblacion Gangal, Sallapadan, Abra province.

Sarona said Maglia surrendered without firearm to Sallapadan Mayor Nenita Mustard Cardenas.

He added the KLG operates in Abra and possibly responsible for the series of attacks and harassments in the province and nearby provinces.

Sarona said Maglia’s surrender came after he got frustrated with the group’s leadership and for fear of his life as government forces continuously conduct offensives against the rebel group.

The surrender of NPA members over the past months is a result of the joint efforts of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, as well as active cooperation of the community and local government units.

The government offers opportunities to former NPA rebels who return to the fold of the law through the Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
