From Malaya Business Insight (Sep 25): Military: Bomb attacks in Zamboanga foiled
THE military yesterday claimed to have foiled a plan of the Abu Sayyaf to stage bombing attacks in Zamboanga City this week, with the arrest of two members of the group last Saturday.
Omar Askali alias Ayub and Mukaram Sapie alias Mukram and Shayif were arrested by the AFP’s Task Force Zamboanga and the city police at around 10:30 a.m. along Governor Lim avenue. Recovered from Askali were a hand grenade, a cellular phone and two identification cards.
Follow-operations resulted in the arrest of Mukram in Barangay Taluksangay later on Saturday. Seized from Mukram’s possession was an improvised bomb and a cal. 45 pistol.
Askali is a “trusted follower” of Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama and is trained in manufacturing improvised explosive devices, said Capt. Jo-ann Petinglay, spokeswoman of the military’s Western Mindanao Command.
Petinglay said troops were still searching the area for another improvised bomb because information provided by Askali indicated that Mukram was keeping two bombs.
