The Davao City-based Eastern Mindanao Command (EMC) on
Sunday announced that it is resuming operations against New People's Army (NPA)
rebels consistent with President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's lifting of the
unilateral ceasefire against the insurgents.
"EMC has issued a directive for all units to be on high
alert and to resume operations against the NPAs consistent with the directive
coming from the military chain-of-command," EMC public affairs office
chief Major Ezra Balagtey said.
He also denied rebel claims that it was the militiamen who
were ambushed in Kapalong, Davao Del Norte on Wednesday were on offensive
operations, in violation of Duterte's unilateral ceasefire order issued on
Monday.
A militiaman was killed while four others were wounded in
the said attack.
"The EMC assures our countrymen that it will remain
committed to protecting our communities against armed threats and in pursuing
peace and development. EMC calls on the NPAs to abandon their armed struggle
and instead join the rest of society in attaining true and lasting peace and
progress for our country," Balagtey added.
Duterte ordered the lifting of the unilateral ceasefire
after the NPAs failed to declare their own on Saturday, the deadline stipulated
by the President.
