Digong’s PSG chief talks with local police for security plan

SECURITY preparation for the assumption of President-elect Rodrigo R. Duterte has presently been discussed by the incoming head of the Presidential Security Group and regional law enforcement agencies.

“Presently, we have not determine what security package will give to (President Duterte) because we have not yet assessed the whole situation,” said Col. Rolando Joselito Bautista, the incoming head of the Presidential Security Group.

Bautista, currently the commander of Joint  Task Group in Basilan, yesterday met with regional and city Police officers to discuss the security plan at the conference room of Davao City Police Office (DCPO).

The conference was attended by acting regional director C/Supt. Manuel Gaerlan, Regional Intelligence Division head Supt. Filmore Escobal, Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) assistant head Ret. Gen. Anselmo Pinili, Deputy Regional Director for Operations Supt. Angel Sumagaysay, Operations head Insp. Ireneo Caburnay, and other members of Task Force Davao.

In an interview at the DCPO yesterday, Bautista told reporters that the PSG has existing protocols that is applied to the previous presidents. However, PSG could innovate based on the desire of Duterte.

Bautista said they have to adjust knowing that Duterte would like to go to places.

According to Bautista, the PSG will also provide security to Duterte’s immediate family as part of their duty.

He said being designated as next PSG commander is challenging.

“It’s a challenge and opportunity and a way I can serve the President and I thankful that he picked me,” said Bautista, a 1985 graduate of the Philippine Military Academy who served as the commander of the 73rd Infantry Battalion covering Davao City and Davao del Norte from 2005 to 2007. Prior to his assignment in Basilan, the Pangasinan native Bautista was the commander of Task Force General Santos in General Santos City.

Meanwhile, security officers are expecting at least 100,000 participants who will attend the June 4 thanksgiving party for Duterte at Crocodile Park.

Acting regional police director Gaerlan said they are coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Office of City Mayor regarding the activity.

“In coordination with the organizers, we want to make sure that appropriate security measures are in place and we want to ensure the safety of the participants,” Gaerlan said.

Gaerlan said they are yet to fix the number of security personnel to be deployed.

“We are still planning,” he said. “Basically we want to cover all aspects of security.”

They are also coordinating with the Bureau of Fire, Philippine Coast Guard, and medical services in securing the area.

Gaerlan said bringing of backpacks, foods, sharp objects, including umbrella, are prohibited.

“We will be strict on our inspection,” he said. “All vehicles and individuals will be (inspected).”
