CAMP GUILLERMO NAKAR, Lucena City (DWDD) – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded nine (9) Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) explosions in different areas in Masbate Province morning of March 15, 2016.
903rd Infantry Brigade Commander Colonel Fernando R. Trinidad said the 1st explosion was reported at 4 a.m. in Brgy Miaga, Uson, Masbate; 2nd explosion was at 5 a.m. in Brgy. Tunga, Esperanza, Masbate; 3rd explosion was at 7:10 a.m in Loving Forest Memorial Garden alongside of National Highway in Brgy. Malinta, Masbate City; 4th explosion at 7:15 a.m. alongside National Highway in Purok 5, Brgy Tabuc, Mobo, Masbate; and a 5th explosion at 8:50 a.m. in Brgy Burgos, Batuan, Ticao Island, Masbate.
Aside from the said areas, Masbate PPO reported IED explosions in Brgy Crossing and Brgy Burnasuerte both of Uson, Brgy Daplian, San Jacinto and Brgy Ilaya, Balud.
The explosion in Brgy Burgos, Batuan left Batuan Chief of Police PSI Aldrin A Rosales and SPO1 Amado C Abiola wounded when an IED exploded as their police mobile was passing at the said barangay.
“These explosions are more of a propaganda tactic of the NPA, that is, to sow fear to the people,” said Colonel Trinidad.
Colonel Trinidad said that the NPA is not capable of attacking a military outpost in big formations as they are dwindling in manpower and firepower.
The AFP Southern Luzon Command believes that the explosions are connected to the NPAs 47th Anniversary on March 29.
At present there are 36 NPAs being hunted by SOLCOM units in Masbate Province.
“The NPA is a diminishing group in Southern Luzon, as such; they resort to terror acts like these IED explosions to project that they are still a strong force,” said SOLCOM Chief Lieutenant General Ricardo R. Visaya.
Moreover, Lieutenant General Visaya assured that security measures are being implemented by SOLCOM units in Masbate to ensure the safety of the Masbateños against the NPA’s abuses and terror acts.
