From GMA News (May 2): Palace: Govt verifying reports Basit Usman wounded in Lanao

Government is verifying reports that suspected bomber Basit Usman had been wounded in an encounter in the Lanao area, Malacañang said Saturday.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said they received reports of Usman being wounded but added the Defense Department is still confirming the report.

"We have received reports saying he was wounded in an encounter. We are in the process of confirming this," she said on government-run dzRB radio.

Usman is a wanted bomber targeted by Philippine authorities in an operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Jan. 25.

The Jan. 25 clash killed 44 Special Action Force troopers and 18 Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighters

Last Feb. 13, Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu said Usman is believed wounded and is likely hiding in Mamasapano in Maguindanao.

In an interview on dzBB radio, Mangudadatu said Basit Usman is wounded in the shoulder and may be moving around the town.

In text messages to GMA News Online on Saturday morning, both Armed Forces of the Philippines spokesperson Brig. Gen. Joselito Kakilala and Western Mindanao Command spokesperson Captain Rowena Muyuela said they are still verifying the information from the ground.
