MILF: Pope Francis supports GPH-MILF Peace deal

Posted to the MILF Website (Jan 19): Pope Francis supports GPH-MILF Peace deal

Pope Francis for the second time expressed support to the peace process between the Government of the Philippines and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) with the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) now in Congress for deliberations.

In his first public statement delivered at Malacañan Palace, he ended it with a specific reference to the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro.

“In a particular way, I express my trust that the progress made in bringing peace to the south of the country will result in just solutions in accord with the nation’s founding principles and respectful of the inalienable rights of all, including the indigenous peoples and religious minorities”, the Inquirer quoted him saying.

His remarks were read before an audience that included President Aquino, senior government officials and members of the diplomatic corps.

Last Monday, January 12 before living for Sri Lanka he also mentioned the Bangsamoro peace breakthrough.

“I also note with pleasure that last March an agreement was signed to end long years of tension in the Philippines,” he said.

Pope Francis, who was elected Bishop of Rome and thus head of the Roman Catholic Church only in March 2013, has already acquired a reputation as a risk-taking believer in the Vatican’s diplomatic prowess, the Inquirer said in its report.

“One example close to my heart of how dialogue can build bridges comes from the recent decision of the United States of America and Cuba to end a lack of communication which has endured for more than half a century, and to initiate a rapprochement for the benefit of their respective citizens”, the Inquirer also quoted him saying.
