One policeman was wounded in a clash with communist rebels in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Norte, officials said on Wednesday.

Officials said the fighting erupted in San Francisco village in the town in the town of Sergio Osmeña. The policemen were patrolling the village when they encountered a group of New People’s Army rebels, sparking a running gun battle.

Troops from the 32nd Infantry Battalion were deployed to help police forces pursue the rebels, but did not catch up with them.

The wounded officer, PO1 Carl Edward Panoril, was rushed to hospital.
