Manila RTC junks motion to transfer detention of CPP-NPA leaders

From the Philippine News Agency (Jun 18): Manila RTC junks motion to transfer detention of CPP-NPA leaders

Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 32 presiding judge Thelma Medina on Wednesday denied the motion of the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) to transfer the detention of couple Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, the alleged leaders of Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army (CPP-NPA).

During the hearing, Medina stressed that the Tiamzon couple should remain detained in Camp Crame, the General Headquarters of the PNP because they are considered as "high-value" prisoners.

The PNP-CIDG earlier asked the Manila RTC to transfer the Tiamzon couple from the Camp Crame Custodial Center to the prison facility of the Bureau of Jail Management Penology (BJMP).

According to the PNP-CIDG, the Tiamzon couple should be transferred to a detention facility proximate where their case is filed and with stricter security measures because they believe that the PNP has no capability to maintain the security of the Tiamzon couple.

The Tiamzon couple are facing several cases such as kidnapping with serious illegal detention, murder, frustrated murder and illegal possession of explosives.
