From ABS-CBN (Feb 14): 7 wounded soldiers awarded medals
Seven soldiers from the 10th Infantry Division (10ID) of the Philippine Army were awarded wounded personnel medals for their participation in clashes against New People's Army (NPA) rebels in February.
One of the awardees, Cpl. Joney Baysa from the 25th Infantry Battalion sustained a gunshot wound in his shoulder while he was fighting rebels in Brgy. Casoon, Monkayo, Compostela Valley last February 11.
The 6 other soldiers are members of the 39th Infantry Battalion. Pfc. Lory Kim Lacal, Cpl. Marcelino Bagood, Jr., Pfc. Olomodin Dicampong, and Pfc. Genesis Quilaton were wounded after they were hit by shrapnel from a landmine explosion.
Sgt. Eliseo Peraño sustained gunshot wounds in the back and knee, while Pfc. Michael Guibao sustained a bullet wound in the head. The bullet has yet to be removed.
The 6 soldiers were wounded in an encounter with NPA's Committee Front 51 and 71 in Brgy. Kapatagan, Digos City in Davao del Sur last February 10.
Aside from medals, the wounded soldiers will receive cash assistance. They will also be promoted to a higher rank.
The Davao region is one of the areas with the most number of rebels in the country, with around 14 communist fronts, the military said.
The Army will send additional soldiers to the region to fight the rebels.
