U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar pledged on Monday to continue working for a strong alliance between the Philippines and the United States in line with the commitment of the US government to unimpeded freedom of navigation in Asia-Pacific waters. Lugar, who will be in the country until Wednesday, made the pledge to President Aquino during a courtesy call at Malacañang. “I plan to speak with various audiences back home on why the US should continue to support steadfast allies like the Philippines, and how we could be more helpful to you as a partner, ” a Palace press statement quoted the senator as having told Mr. Aquino. Malacañang said Lugar made the statement as he pledged to continue working for a strong Philippines-US alliance, citing the strong commitment of the US in ensuring safe passage of ships and unimpeded trade through the seas of Asia Pacific....
