From the Philippine News Agency (Oct 22): Army official condemns NPA attack in Compostela Valley

Lt. Col. Jerry Borja, commanding officer of the 71st Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army condemned the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels for attacking soldiers and civilians last Sunday in Barangay Calabcab, Maco, Compostela Valley Province. Borja revealed that based on their initial investigation, one of the victims was shot by the rebels despite surrendering. “She narrated that when one of the rebels pointed the gun at her, she raised her hand, saying she is a civilian and pleaded to spare her, but the rebel opened fire,” he said. Borja said the attack was a deliberate offensive operation by the rebels against the residents who have been supporting the Army’s Peace and Development Outreach Program (PDOP). During the attack, two alleged members of NPA were killed while nine persons composed of seven soldiers and two residents were wounded following an attack that happened around 11:45 a.m. Borja identified the fatalities by their aliases as Manny and Max.... Two high-powered firearms were also recovered from the rebel positions during the clearing operation....
