ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A logistics provider of Dawlah Islamiya (DI), formerly known as the Maute group, has surrendered to military authorities in the province of Lanao del Sur, military officials said Friday.
ZAMBOANGA CITY -- A logistics provider of Dawlah Islamiya (DI), formerly known as the Maute group, has surrendered to military authorities in the province of Lanao del Sur, military officials said Friday.
Maj. Arvin John Encinas, Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) spokesperson, identified the surrenderer as Hadji Soaib Ander, who supplied guns, ammunition, and food to the terrorist group.
Encinas said Ander surrendered to the Army’s 49th Infantry Battalion (49IB) in Butig, Lanao del Sur at about 3 p.m. on Wednesday, and turned over one US-made KG9 semi-automatic pistol and ammunition.
Ander provided logistics to the group of Ali Amintao during their series of encounters with the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade troopers in Butig in 2016.
Brig. Gen. Romeo Brawner, commander of the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade, said Soaib had a son named Hadip who was recruited by the Maute brothers and was unfortunately killed in a firefight on Sept. 23, 2017.
“We are delighted by his decision to return to the mainstream of society and we will provide the necessary assistance to help him start a new life,” Brawner said.
The surrender of Soaib was facilitated by the 49IB’s Charlie Company troopers and Butig Mayor Dimnatang Pansar.
Encinas said Soaib was undergoing debriefing at the headquarters of the 49IB in Camp Darul-iman, Barangay Sandab, Butig.
