The Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) has activated a
special probe body to thoroughly investigate the gun slay attempt on two Arab
nationals, including an embassy official, in this city.
Supt. Luisito Magnaye, ZCPO officer-in-charge, on Wednesday
afternoon reported to Local Government Secretary Senen Sarmiento that they
activated Special Investigation Task Group Al-Qarni.
Sarmiento dropped by this city to get first hand information
over the incident on instruction of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III.
“We will focus on the motive of the incident,” Magnaye
reported to Sarmiento.
Magnaye said the incident took place around 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday outside the Dr. Juanito Bruno Gymnasium of the government-owned Western
Mindanao State University (WMSU).
Wounded were Dr. Aidh Al-Qarni, an international lecturer;
and, Sheikh Turki Assaegh, the religious attaché of the Royal Embassy of Saudi
Arabia.
Magnaye said initial investigation showed the triggerman,
Rugasan Kiliste Misuari III, surfaced from the crowd of people outside the
gymnasium and shot Al-Qarni first and then Assaegh, who were already aboard a
vehicle and about to leave.
Al-Qarni, accompanied by Assaegh, had just finished his
lecture in a symposium held at WMSU’s Bruno gymnasium.
Al-Qarni is a renowned author of many inspirational and
motivational books worldwide aside from being an international lecturer.
Magnaye said the members of the Police Security and
Protection Group (PSPG) detailed as security of the two Arab nationals opened
fire and neutralized Misuari and collared Junaidi Cadir, 36, an accomplice of
Misuari.
Magnaye said that Mujer Abubakar, 31, another accomplice of
Misuari, was arrested by policemen along Baban Street after he jumped over the
concrete fence at the back of the gymnasium.
Magnaye said Misuari’s identity was established through the
documents recovered by the Scene of the Crime Operatives (Soco).
Investigation showed that Abubakar is a pedicab driver and a
resident of Barangay Sta. Barbara, this city while Cadir, a jobless is a
resident of Barangay Taguiti, a coastal barangay 76.50 kilometers east of City
Hall.
Sarmiento disclosed that further in-depth investigation over
the incident should continue.
“We cannot share everything as of the moment as
investigation is going one,” Sarmiento told the Philippines News Agency.
