Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Saturday said all nations must continue to work for peace and reject war.

"May this day also be a reminder to all nations to continue to work for peace, settle differences amicably, and reject war as an instrument to further their national interests," Lorenzana said in a press statement during the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

He described World War II as the bloodiest conflict in the history of mankind where millions had lost their lives and countless more had suffered.

"We also remember those who fought in defense of our freedom and pay homage to their sacrifice and heroism," Lorenzana added.

He said through the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, the country would continue to take care of the welfare of the World War II veterans who are still alive, as well as the widows of those who have departed.

"Let us honor the memories of those who are no longer with us by emulating their spirit of patriotism in our daily lives," Lorenzana said.

On Aug. 15, 1945, Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces in the Pacific, marking the end of World War II, which is considered to have started on Sept. 1, 1939, after Germany invaded Poland.
