CAMP COL. RAFAEL C. RODRIGUEZ, Butuan City – Forty-eight former New People’s Army (NPA) rebels on Friday signified their withdrawal of support from the Communist movement by pledging loyalty to the government in a ceremony held at the regional headquarters of Caraga Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13) here.
And as a landmark show of defiance against the Communist movement, the former NPAs burned the NPA flag.
After burning the flag, the former NPAs signed a manifesto of withdrawal of support from the underground movement.
Agusan del Norte Gov. Dale Corvera led the reading of the pledge of withdrawal of support by the former rebels from the Communist movement.
The activity was attended by Police Regional Office 13 Director Brig. Gen. Joselito T. Esquivel Jr., together with Agusan del Norte Rep. Maria Angelica Rosedell M. Amante-Matba and other members of the PRO 13 command group, provincial officials and regional line agencies of the government.
Of the 48 former rebels who surrendered to PRO-13 this year, 42 were from the Guerrilla Front 4-A (GF 4-A) that covers the areas of Agusan del Norte, Butuan City, and Gingoog City; while six were from the Guerrilla Front (GF) 88 covering the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Bukidnon.
The top government officials in the region, the police and military lauded the 48 former rebels for deciding to leave the Communist movement and rejoin their families and communities.
“This is a celebration because our brothers and sisters who were once deceived by the Communist terrorists are now with us in the government,” Esquivel said.
