ILOILO City – Relentless operations by government troops are significantly weakening the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the Visayas, according to the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Visayas Command (VisCom).
“We will sustain our campaign until they surrender or are totally eradicated,” said Major General Benedict Arevalo, VisCom commander.
He further mentioned that the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division (3ID) aims to neutralize or dismantle at least two guerilla fronts in Region 6 before 2023 concludes.
“The rebels have already weakened, so our goal is to dismantle their legal fronts before the end of this year,” Arevalo stated.
Currently, there are five legal front committees operating in Panay and Negros, which include the Southern and Central fronts in Panay, as well as the Southwest and Central Negros fronts in Negros.
“We hope that bullets and guns aren’t the only solution… If they persist in their refusal, we’ll continue our offensive operations. Our pursuit of them will be relentless, and they can’t escape the law,” Arevalo emphasized.
Data from the 3ID highlighted that in September alone, 30 NPA rebels were neutralized, meaning either killed, captured, or surrendered, across Western and Central Visayas.
Detailed breakdown reveals that 16 were killed in clashes, 12 opted to surrender to the government, and two were captured.
During this period, the military confiscated 33 firearms — 15 high-powered and 18 low-powered — as well as five explosives. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
