PINUKPUK, Kalinga, Sept. 14 (PIA) – Farmers, teachers and residents crossing the Saltan River can now breath a sigh of relief as the much –longed for hanging footbridge is being readied for turn over to the barangay local government unit.
Through the initiative of Congressman Allen Jesse Mangaoang, the Tappo, Apatan foot bridge was funded for a total of P2 million by the Department of Public Works and Highways- Lower Kalinga District Engineering Office under its local infrastructure project and implementation was being fast tracked for the safety of people crossing the Saltan River.
The bridge which was destroyed by Typhoon Lawin some years ago, is under the jurisdiction of Pinukpuk local government unit (LGU), however, the Office of the Congressman and DPWH came to the rescue since the LGU has meager funds.
Users of this bridge include farmers with production area located on the other side of the river, teachers teaching at Bonnong Elementary School and residents of the Saltan line as well as people from the Cal-owan line.
Mangaoang during the project inspection over the weekend congratulated DPWH, the contractor and the barangay officials for the quality implementation of the project and its almost completion despite the late release of funds for the purpose. The contractor proceeded with the construction even if funds had not been released.
Apatan Barangay Kagawad Johnny Cadao extended the barangay’s gratitude to Mangaoang and to District Engineer Ruby Uyam for their great concern to the people as he committed he will propose to the barangay council for the allocation of maintenance fund for the bridge.
Apatan is one of the End Local Communist Armed Conflict (ELCAC) - covered barangays in the municipality. (JDP/PAB-PIA CAR, Kalinga)
