Troops of the Philippine Army’s 12th Infantry Battalion (12IB) and New People’s Army (NPA) rebels exchanged fire on Sunday in remote Sitio Bidang, Barangay Siya, Tapaz, Capiz.
The encounter happened around 9:40 a.m. It lasted for about 10 minutes.

There were more or less five rebels. They retreated.

Village residents alerted the Army about the rebels’ presence, said Major Cenon Pancito III, spokesperson of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division based in Jamindan, Capiz.

The rebels were recruiting most especially youngsters, said Pancito, and extorting money and supplies from villagers.

Army troops recovered from the encounter site a .38 revolver, a homemade 12-gauge shotgun, a black shirt with NPA logo, three empty shells of 5.56MM cartridges, and two empty shells of .38 handgun.

None from the Army’s side got hurt or killed in the encounter.

“Information from the people is always reliable. We intend to pursue the rebels until they are rendered irrelevant,” said Pancito.

The best option for the rebels is to surrender, he stressed.

“They cannot win the fight against the government. Our forces and resources are mightier than them. May their realization of this come earlier than our next encounter. Their luck is significantly diminishing,” said Pancito.

People want peace, he stressed.

“Head the clamor of the people. Abandon the armed struggle, it will not bring you good but death,” Pancito told the NPA.
