A suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed on Friday morning in an encounter with government soldiers in a remote village in Aroroy, Masbate, a Philippine Army report said.
The troops were on combat patrol when they chanced upon a seven-man NPA group in Barangay Cabasan at around 6:45 a.m., said 1LT Mishel Mitra, 903rd Brigade Civil Military Operations Officer.
In a phone interview, Mitra said a 10-minute firefight took place, during which a rebel was killed and left behind by his companions.
After the brief gun battle, the soldiers were able to recover from the scene a .45-caliber pistol and a claymore mine.
Mitra said no casualty was reported among the government troops.
The body of the slain rebel was brought to the Aroroy police station for identification and documentation.
