A tugboat captain who was kidnapped with another crewman by suspected Abu Sayyag gunmen in the waters of Basilan province earlier this week was rescued Saturday by government troops, the military reported.
A report from Colonel Juvymax Uy, commander of the military’s Joint Task Force Basilan, to Camp Aguinaldo said Aurelio Agacac was recovered in Barangay Basakan in Hadji Mohammad Adul town, where they also seized two watercraft believed used by the extremists on Friday.
Agacac and his chief engineer, Laurencio Tiro, were snatched off their tugboat when gunmen attacked the Panamanian-flagged MV Super Shuttle Roro 9 off Sibago island Thursday afternoon as they towed the vessel from Cebu City to General Santos City.
The report said operations are ongoing to rescue Tiro.
