From the Zamboanga Today (May 7): NPA rebels ambush Army soldiers in Kabasalan
A member of the Philippine Army was wounded after the truck he was riding with five other soldiers was ambushed by a group of armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA), at Sitio Siquijor, Barangay Palinta, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay Province (ZSP), on Monday.
Regional Public Information Officer, Officer In-Charge, (RPIO-OIC) Inspector Dahlan Samuddin said based on the report submitted by Kabasalan Municipal Police Station, the firefight ensued at about 7:15 a.m. of Monday when the soldiers were on their way to their headquarters.
Samuddin said the military truck with plate number SHY 325 driven by Private First Class Roberto Dua came from a military detachment in Lapaz, Naga, ZSP, heading to their headquarters in Barangay PeƱaranda.
Police said upon reaching the crime scene, about 15 fully armed NPA members immediately fired upon the military truck resulting to the encounter.
The firefight resulted in the injury of Staff Sergeant Rodel Roda.
The wounded soldier was brought to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Recovered at the encounter area by the augmentation army troop were more or less 30 pieces spent shells of AK47 Rifle and more or less 70 spent shells of M16 Rifle.
During the clearing operation conducted by the Philippine Army, they retrieved an unexploded improvised explosive device (IED) at the vicinity of the encounter site.
Hot pursuit operation against the perpetrators was launched by the elements of the Phil Army and checkpoints were established by the elements of Kabasalan Municipal Police to prevent the lawless elements from fleeing to other places.
Samuddin added that the police have already coordinated with the different hospitals and barangay health centers to report any wounded person admitted for medication.
